Introducing Mathamagic™
MathaMagic, based on the schools current pedagogical framework in early years numeracy, the Learning Framework in Number (LFIN created by Wright, Stranger, Stafford and Martland, 2008), is an incremental program aimed to develop more efficient strategies than counting by ones and alleviate cognitive overload as the student experiences more complicated calculations. The program, created by the teachers of School of MathaMagic to complement classroom pedagogy, provides a way to:
- Build on students current knowledge to “build structures that are more complex, powerful and abstract than those that they possess” (Cobb, 1988, p.6)
- Promote dialogue about mental strategies and efficient methods to calculate. “More than 80% of all mathematical computations in daily life involve mental computation and estimation rather than written computation” (Reys et al, 2009, p.217)
- Actively engage parents in the numeracy education of their child that is meaningful and supportive of their child’s stage of strategy development. “Schools that undertake effective parental engagement are … up to ten times more likely to improve numeracy” (CEM, 2013, p.5).
Mathamagic is designed to be on the run, with little hands on required, consolidating your child’s number and early arithmetic knowledge, at their level.
